February is Black History Month

As we celebrate Black History Month, we remember the important contributions and achievements of African Americans throughout history. We are proud to promote activities throughout this month which will make for enriching match activities that promote diversity.

Upcoming Events
Jordan House and the Underground Railroad
Did you know that the Jordan House in West Des Moines was a designated stopover on the Underground Railroad? The house, now a museum, is open on Saturday and Sundays  from 11am and 1pm during the winter and spring. Click here to learn more.

Forest Flicks- “The Hate U Give” on Monday, February 25 at 5:30pm Forest Ave Public Library
Based on the bestselling book, this movie follows Starr who witnesses the fatal shooting of her best friend Khalil at the hands of a police officer. Now, facing pressure from all sides of the community, Starr must find her voice and stand up for what’s right. Rated PG-13: Parents strongly cautioned: Some material may be inappropriate for children under 13.

DMU Black History Month Keynote Speak: Dr. Ebonie Vincent on Monday, February 25 at 12pm at Des Moines University
Dr. Ebonie Vincent will give a talk entitled “Eventually Everything Connects: the mission, the process, the moment.”

I am Africa on Saturday, March 30 at  5pm at Franklin Junior High
Enjoy contemporary and traditional African dance performances, eat authentic African food,  and learn about the challenges and joys of African immigrant and refugee youth and their families living in Central Iowa. For more information, click here.
