BBBSCI held a reception for Big Sister Kim Weeks in late April.

Big Brothers Big Sisters of Central Iowa is pleased to announce that Kim Weeks, a 26+ year Principal employee in the Retirement Investment division, has been named the Iowa 2017 Big Sister of the Year by Big Brothers Big Sisters of America, the nation’s oldest and largest one-on-one mentoring program for at-risk youth.

For almost 50 years, Big Brothers Big Sisters of Central Iowa (BBBSCI) has operated under the belief that inherent in every child is the ability to succeed and thrive in life. The agency makes carefully screened, meaningful, and monitored matches between adult volunteers (“Bigs”) and children (“Littles”) ages 5 through 18. These positive relationships have a direct and lasting effect on the lives of the young people served.

“Kim inspires us with her dedication and passion for the community. We strive to provide an environment where employees like Kim can pursue opportunities to enrich the lives of others. Kim embodies this and we are proud of everything she has accomplished,” said Steve Whitty, VP-Corporate Marketing at Principal.

Big Sister, Kim, has been matched with Little Sister, Nyajuok, for over 5 years. Nyajuok is the third of eight children in her family. Nyajuok’s mother wanted her to have a one-on-one mentor who would provide her with individual attention and support. Kim and her Little love spending time together. Two of their favorite activities include attending productions at the Des Moines Play House and going to the movies. One of their favorite outings has been going to Adventureland.

"Nyajuok gets me to do things I wouldn’t normally do,” says Kim, “We have a blast!”
