Program Update

Big Brothers Big Sisters of Central Iowa (BBBSCI) couldn’t successfully create new matches and support current matches without its program staff. This past fiscal year, BBBSCI served 555 youth in its School-Based, Workplace and Community-Based Mentoring Programs.

School-Based Mentoring
The school-based staff is gearing up for a new year of programming as a new school year approaches. We are partnering with Greenwood, Windsor, Hubbell, Studebaker, Lakewood, Findley, King, Crossroads, Jensen, Capital View, Garton, Clive and Hillside Elementary Schools. 216 youth were served through this program during the past fiscal year.

Workplace Mentoring
BBBSCI’s 3rd year of Workplace Mentoring will kick off on October 10. Middle school students from partner schools travel to their business partners’ workplace to meet with their mentor bi-weekly on early out Wednesdays.

To-date, business partners include Marsh/Mercer, NCMIC Group, Inc. and Wells Fargo. Des Moines Middle School partners include Callanan, Hiatt, Hoyt, Harding and Merrill.

Gabbie Ruggiero, Future Leaders in Action Fellow, designed a 3-year curriculum that the staff will utilize to help Littles prepare for life after high school graduation. These materials cover career exploration, preparation for the future and skills for success.

Thank you to Marsh/Mercer, NCMIC Group, Inc. and Wells Fargo for being Workplace Mentoring partners!

Community-Based Mentoring
This spring, 13 of our Littles graduated from high school, and we honored them at the Match Makers Breakfast in June. Littles attended the event with their Bigs and family. UnitedHealthcare presented Littles with a special gift – laptop computers. BBBSCI is so proud of them and wish them the best as they begin the next steps of their lives. During the last fiscal year, 339 youth were served through the Community-Based Mentoring Program.

Thank you to our Bigs, Littles, their parents/guardian(s), and school and business partners for making these programs a BIG success!
