When Ireland and Letti first met through Big Brothers Big Sisters of Central Iowa in December 2023, neither of them could have predicted just how special their connection would become. What began as weekly visits through the School-Based Program has grown into a meaningful and lasting friendship.
Ireland, now a senior in high school, has been a consistent and caring presence in Letti’s life for the past two years. Each week, they meet at school to play games, spend time outside, and talk about anything that is on their minds. These simple moments have helped create a safe and supportive space where Letti feels heard and valued.
Their connection doesn't end when the school year does. During the summer, they’ve continued their friendship by meeting up outside of school, whether it's catching a movie or just spending time together. That extra effort speaks to the strength of their bond.
Letti has grown in many ways since their match began. She’s become more confident, more comfortable expressing herself, and more open to sharing what she’s going through. Knowing she has someone like Ireland to lean on has made a real difference, especially during times when she’s faced challenges with school or friendships.
While there haven’t been major obstacles, Ireland’s steady presence has been incredibly impactful. She shows up consistently, listens without judgment, and offers encouragement when Letti needs it most.
The relationship they’ve built is something truly special. Both Ireland and Letti describe each other as family, and it's clear that their bond goes far beyond the program. Through their time together, they’ve created a friendship rooted in trust, support, and genuine care for one another.
In every sense, Ireland and Letti’s match is a reminder of how powerful mentorship can be—and how it can grow into something even more meaningful.
