Little Kacey and his Big, Alaina

A Match Rooted in Learning and Giving: Alaina & Kacey’s Story

When Alaina signed up to become a Big through Big Brothers Big Sisters of Central Iowa, she hoped to make a difference. What she didn’t expect was just how much her Little, Kacey, would inspire her in return.

Their match has grown through meaningful moments, fun outings, and a shared curiosity for learning. One of their most memorable outings happened during the holiday season—when the spirit of giving was front and center. Alaina had a special idea: take Kacey grocery shopping with a $20 budget, not for themselves, but to buy food for a local pantry. The challenge? Stick to the budget while making sure their donations would truly help someone in need.

With his list in hand, Kacey transformed into a savvy shopper—doing the math, comparing prices, and thoughtfully choosing non-perishable items. Alaina said it turned into a fun, hands-on way to teach real-life money skills and the importance of community care. One of the most touching parts came on the car ride home when Kacey, hungry from all their shopping, eyed the granola bars they had bought. After a quiet moment of thought, he made a selfless decision: “Someone else probably needs these more.”

That day, Kacey learned not just how to stretch a dollar—but how powerful it is to give back.

And giving back has become a theme for their match—especially when it comes to Kacey’s love of learning. When they first met, Kacey’s goal was simple but meaningful: to become a “smarter reader and writer.” His mom shared that reading was a challenge, and she hoped a mentor could help build his confidence.

Alaina got to work. They started with small visits to the library every other month, which quickly became one of Kacey’s favorite activities. Today, they go at least once a month. Whether they’re reading ocean-themed books (Kacey’s favorite), playing educational games, or building with Legos, every visit is filled with learning, laughter, and growth.

Kacey now proudly shares that Alaina has helped him with his reading. His mom beams when she says Alaina has “sparked a love of reading” in her son—and that he’s doing so much better in school.

Alaina and Kacey’s match is a shining example of what mentorship can do. It’s not just about time spent together—it’s about the life lessons, small wins, and moments of kindness that add up to something truly special.
