Workplace Mentoring Program

Where Potential Meets Opportunity

Big Brothers Big Sisters of Central Iowa’s Workplace Mentoring Program connects students, known as Littles, with caring business professionals, known as Bigs, in a workplace setting. Through meaningful mentoring relationships and hands-on experiences, students build confidence, explore career possibilities, and prepare for their future.

How the Program Works

Local schools and businesses partner with BBBSIA to provide students with mentoring experiences during the school year. Littles visit a participating workplace every other week and meet with their Big for a one-hour session.

Transportation is provided from the school to the workplace, and each session is supervised and facilitated by BBBSIA staff. Mentors and students participate in a structured curriculum designed to support personal growth, college preparation, career readiness, and relationship-building.

Become a Workplace Mentor

Workplace mentors are professionals from a variety of industries, roles, and backgrounds who want to make a difference in the life of a young person.

As a Big, you will:

• Serve as a positive role model.

• Encourage your Little’s strengths and potential.

• Help your Little explore educational and career opportunities.

• Build a meaningful relationship through shared interests and consistent support.

BBBSIA matches Bigs and Littles based on personalities, interests, and compatibility.

What Students Gain

Through the Workplace Mentoring Program, Littles have opportunities to:

• Build confidence and communication skills.

• Learn about different careers and workplace environments.

• Strengthen relationships with peers and adults.

• Prepare for college, employment, and future success.

Safety, Training, and Support

The safety and success of every match are our highest priorities. Each mentor completes a background check, interview, and training process before being matched.

BBBSIA professional staff provide ongoing supervision, resources, and support throughout the program.

Program Commitment

• Frequency: Every other week during the school year

• Session length: One hour

• Location: Participating local businesses

• Cost: Free for participants
