Fishing, Baseball, Truck Conversations

What started with long afternoons of fishing quickly turned into a steady, meaningful connection. Since being matched in September 2023, Jesus and his Big Brother Sam have built a relationship that feels less like a program match and more like family. From catching giant catfish to practicing new knots, fishing remains one of their favorite traditions, but their time together has now grown far beyond the water.
Sam shows up consistently for Jesus. Whether it’s cheering from the sidelines at baseball games, celebrating birthdays, attending hockey games, or spending quiet evenings working on R/C cars, Sam makes sure Jesus knows he has someone in his corner.
Over time, Sam has become a trusted mentor and steady male role model in Jesus’ life. Their conversations—often happening in the truck, on a boat, or over a game of pool—have created space for Jesus to talk openly about school, friendships, frustrations, and even challenges with family. Sam encourages Jesus to take a breath during tough moments on the pitcher’s mound, stay humble on the field, and keep communication open when things get difficult.
Jesus’ mom, Josie, says Sam has become “part of the family.” Whether he’s stopping by to check in, bringing the boys along for new adventures, or simply being there during busy seasons of life, Sam’s presence has had a meaningful impact on their entire household.
As Jesus grows and navigates the changes that come with adolescence—new schools, new interests, and new challenges—Sam continues to walk alongside him with patience, humor, and heart.
Jesus often says Sam is “like family” and someone who is always there when he needs him. And Sam proudly talks about Jesus as his “little buddy,” someone he deeply cares about and loves spending time with.
From 10-hour fishing days to cheering from the sidelines, from first rodeos to family dinners, Sam and Jesus have built a relationship rooted in time, encouragement, and trust.
Their match is a powerful reminder of how life-changing it can be when a caring adult shows up week after week. With someone in his corner, Jesus’ world continues to grow and with it, endless possibilities for the future.
