Sterling has been an active and dedicated volunteer with Big Brothers Big Sisters of Central Iowa since 2018, when he was first matched with Little Brother Adebayor. Their match lasted an impressive five years, continuing until Adebayor graduated from high school in 2023—a testament to Sterling’s commitment and consistency. In recognition of his impact, Sterling was honored as Big Brother of the Year in 2021.
That commitment to showing up didn’t end when one match did—it simply grew into his next match with Little Brother Joey.
Since being matched in October 2024, Sterling has shown up for Joey with remarkable consistency, intention, and heart. From high school football and basketball games and BBBS events to simple days walking at Gray’s Lake or grabbing a bite to eat, Sterling has created steady, meaningful moments that help Joey grow. Over time, Joey has come out of his shell, becoming more confident, more expressive, and more comfortable sharing his thoughts.
Sterling leads with patience, positivity, and genuine care, teaching Joey everyday skills like manners, social confidence, and trust. He stays engaged with Joey’s family, actively seeks out ways to support him, and consistently advocates for BBBS in his workplace and community.
Their match reflects exactly what lasting mentoring impact looks like: consistency, connection, and the willingness to keep showing up.
